Hormones are a reflection of our environment

Whilst there are many conditions that are hormonally expressed and/or driven, for the most part – hormonal disruption is simply an indication pointing to where the environment is out of alignment with the person’s highest good.

Hormonal issues point to a stress response that is triggered by environmental feedback that communicates to the body that it’s unsafe (or unhealthy), and therefore libido and optimal hormonal expression (like fertility) is downregulated as a survival response.

Environmental influences are ubiquitous and unavoidable – the thoughts you think, the people you spend time with, the food you eat, the quality of your lifestyle (e.g. sleep, relaxation, stress management, joy, exercise), your gut health, nutrient status and so on.

Environmental influences also include exogenous sources of toxicants; endocrine disrupting chemicals in food, water, air – as well as personal care and household products i.e. deodorant, perfume, scented candles and cleaning products – all contribute to hormonal dysregulation in some way, to some degree or another.

Another powerful environmental influence are the buildings in which we spend a lot of time, like our homes. An unfavourable shift in the microbiome of a building, particularly due to water damage, can wreak havoc on hormones. This is because the mould that proliferates as a result of undetected or mismanaged water intrusion can disrupt hormonal balance very easily in a number of ways.

How does mould cause hormonal imbalances?

There are several different ways in which mould can throw our hormones out of balance – and I cover some of the major ones in the presentation below.

Please bear in mind, the keynote below was crafted for health professionals – so it’s going to be a little bit on the technical side. Also, as much as this is probably obvious to you, I need you to know this does not constitute medical advice or replace medical attention from your healthcare provider. What I do hope you take away from it a better understanding of how mould can impact hormones and fertility, especially if you’ve had exposure to a water-damaged building and are suffering the effects.
